Leading the Congregation (Revised Edition) (Co-Authored with Norman Shawchuck)Roger Heuser and Norman Shawchuck have recently revised and expanded an earlier edition of Leading the Congregation: Caring for Yourself While Serving the People, published by Abingdon Press, 2010 (331 pages). In Part One: Leading from Within, the heart of transformational leadership examines the rich interior spiritual life—giving oneself to spiritual disciplines and learning to shed layers of the false self in order to be more authentically human and Spirit led. In Part Two: Leading with Others, the process of forming a leadership team as a purposeful community for the sake of others is naturally difficult, yet fruitful and nourishing. In Part Three: Leading Toward Transformation, the compassionate vision of the church as a signpost of the kingdom of God is inherently transformational in its mission—it is among other things the good news of forgiveness, the experience of salvation and wholeness, the love of enemies and those on the margins, and the encounter of an abundant life in Christ. The journey of leading a congregation toward transformation is not for the faint or divided of heart; rather the journey is for leaders who—like the disciples on the walk to Emmaus—experienced the heart blazing truth of the One who opened the scriptures to them and who sat at their table while breaking bread with them (Luke 24:13-35). Such intimacy is sustenance for the leaders’ journey with the One in whom God “was reconciling the world to himself . . . and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us” (2 Cor 5:19). Chapter titles include: The Dangers of Leading, The Interior Attitudes of the Leader, The Leader’s Spirituality, The Leader’s Call, The Leader’s Vision and Ensuing Mission, The Interplay of Light and Shadow, Discerning Priorities/Making Choices, Team Ethos, Team Formation, Teams Working Through Conflict, The Team’s Emotional Processes, The Leadership Team: Pastors and Boards, The Spirituality of the Congregation, A Clear and Compelling Mission, The Vision We Share, and Transformational Change. Bishop Rueben P. Job writes, “Heuser and Shawchuck have done an outstanding revision of their classic volume, Leading the Congregation. The pursuits of excellence and spirituality are woven into a beautiful and practical guide for faithful ministry. This volume belongs on the desk of every pastor and in the curriculum of every school of theology. The authors are as courageous in naming the cost, demands, and dangers of ministry as they are in faithful in making plain the abundant resources available to enable and enhance effective ministry in our time. Leading the Congregation is a book for everyone seeking a practical guide to excellence and faithfulness in ministry.” |

The Trinity: Practically SpeakingA God who is three and yet one? How can that be, and what does it mean for our lives? Since the word “Trinity” does not appear in the Bible, many people wonder whether the doctrine is anything more than an intellectual puzzle created by theologians. This book takes readers on a guided tour of the logic leading to understanding God as Trinity. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in the Bible (and in Christian experience) are all vital to the reality of salvation. All three save. This point may not seem to be very significant until seen in the light of the basic premise of the entire Bible, namely, that only God can save. To trust in anyone else besides the Lord of life for salvation is idolatry. The fact that the Son saves means that the Son must be divine, and the fact that the Spirit perfects salvation means that the Spirit is also divine. And since God in indisputable one (Deuteronomy 6:4), God must be a Trinity of Father, Son and Spirit. You will, perhaps, finally come to a clear and profound grasp of the life-changing wonder and mystery of our God who it three…yet one! |

Baptized in the Holy Spirit“Pentecostalism, for all of its talk about the Holy Spirit, lacks a pneumatology. Yet, Frank Macchia is convinced that its focus on Spirit baptism can provide a way forward toward a more robustly pneumatological treatment of various systematic theological loci, such as Christology, soteriology, and ecclesiology. In this ground breaking work, Macchia offers a compelling and creative foundation for pneumetological thinking in the twenty-first century by expanding the central distinctive of Pentecostal theology, the baptism in the Holy Spirit.” “At last. This is the book by Frank Macchia we have been waiting for, a comprehensive, balanced, and highly readable recasting of Christian theology that finally assigns the Holy Spirit an appropriate role. Furthermore, this book is truly global in reach, in keeping with the current sweep of the Pentecostal-Charismatic movement around the world. Macchia has a stunning grasp of the relevant material, deploys it judiciously, and adds his own voice in a persuasive but eloquent way. This book will now occupy a prominent place in the next phase of the wider Christian theological enterprise.” Harvey Cox, Professor of Divinity, Harvard University. |

Justified in the Spirit:Creation, Redemption, and the Triune GodThe classic debate on justification by grace through faith has historically been limited to the question of whether justification is the reception of forgiveness by faith alone (classically Protestant) or the personal transformation that occurs as we cooperate with grace (traditionally Catholic). While some more recent ecumenical discussions have sought to link the two, many of these efforts have been criticized as patchwork solutions. Inspired by the typically Pentecostal accent on the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, Justified in the Spirit sets both Protestant and Catholic views within a larger framework, namely, the Spirit of Life as the realm of God’s favor. Since the Holy Spirit is the power of love and communion within the Trinity and between us and God, a pneumatological accent ultimately locates the justification of the sinner within the embrace of the Triune God as a communion of persons.Jürgen Moltmann— University of Tübingen”It is a necessary and new perspective to see the justification of the sinner embraced by the life-giving Spirit. Macchia’s book is a great step forward toward a full Trinitarian concept of salvation. A rich book full of solutions to old theological problems.”William G. Rusch— Yale Divinity School “The doctrine of justification is recognized as a critical element in Christian teaching. Macchia, sensitive to the present ecumenical context, argues persuasively that Christian teaching about the Spirit (pneumatology) has much to offer for a correct understanding of justification. His conclusions are a significant contribution to the present discussion and have ecumenical implications that demand careful reflection. We have here a book of singular consequence.” |

Called and Empowered: Global Mission in Pentecostal Perspective(Co-authored with Murray W. Dempster and Byron D. Klaus.) “Called and Empowered documents the fact that Pentecostalism has come of age. What many hoped and some feared has happened: Pentecostal scholars from the USA, Latin America, Africa, and Europe are not just bathing in the glory of ther missionary successed, but they are beginning to analyze its missionological, theological, political, and ecumenical implications. This is an important and promising beginning of a new type of pentecostal theologizing. I hightly recomment this volume to all critics and admirers of Pentecostalism as well as to the Pentecostals and Charismatics. Walter J Hollenweger, Professor Emeritus of Mission at the University of Birmingham. “…an unprecedented mix of pentecostal theology and mission practice, virtually a manifesto for pentecostal missions in the nineties, indispensable for thoughtful Pentedostals as well as for students of the twentieth-century pentecostal explosion. This is the fullest and finest missiological treatise originating within classical Pentecostalism available to date.” Russell P. Spittler, Professor of New Testament and Direcitor of the David du Plessis Center of Christian Spirituality at Fuller Theological Seminary. |
